Sunday Nov 20 - My First Dal
SF came over around 7:30, and we ran off to New Seasons for some ingredients for dal. She brought a few things over from her place, rice, garlic, an onion. She didn't bring turmeric, as she assumed I'd have some. Not a bad assumption, but I didn't have any.At New Seasons, she buys red lentils, a jalapeno, and cilantro. I buy turmeric, a pomegranate, and some half and half for Monday's coffee.
We speed home and call her friend L to tell her where to come for dinner. SF puts the lentils and water in a pot. I chop the onion, she chops the garlic, I measure the turmeric, and all goes into the pot. Pot on the stove to simmer for 20 min. While waiting, I peel and separate the seeds from the pomegranate. We snack on them while cooking. When the lentils are tender, we add chopped tomato (from my produce stash) and chopped cilantro. Make a batch of rice, and our meal is complete.
I hadn't ever had dal before (or lentils for that matter). Very tasty. I could have used a bit more spice, maybe some more jalapeno, or some of the seeds from the first jalapeno. At any rate, very enjoyable. Thanks SF!
