Mon/Tues (partial), Feb 27/28

Mon AM - Tea, also, some tasty pastries at St. Honre.

Mon Lunch - Roast beef sandwich from home.

Mon Dinner - Went with C and M to Le Happy, where I hadn't been for 2 and a half years. Had a savory crepe, called something like Jambon Jambon, bacon, ham, goat cheese, Gruyere, and sriracha hot sauce. Glass of Bordelet pear cider, and a lemon ginger dessert crepe with coffee. Quite satisfying.

Tues AM - Tea

Tues Lunch - Met Scoop over at Harrison in the Fox Tower. I had a half sandwich and soup. Roasted chicken BTL and carrot ginger soup. The wine by the glass list left a LOT to be desired, so we had cocktails. Mine included cranberry juice, sage, and vodka, as well as some other ingredients. Very tasty lunch, as good as always to see Scoop.

Tues Dinner - Dined with my favorite ADC at Dot's tonight. Jalapeno cheese fries and the farmer's chicken sandwich. Tasty as always...

I have a good friend who is thinking of discontinuing his/her blog. This due to lack of time to post. Man, I wish I had a life so that I had that same problem... I'm beginning this post while eating dinner... Lame.

AM-Tea (Stash organic black/green earl grey)

Mid-morning - Went to breakfast with the gardener and the barrister. I hadn't seen them since returning home from France. They were amazed that I hadn't yet been to Gravy, so we agree to meet at 8:30 (since I am meeting CC at 10 to go to Uwajimaya). I am a few minutes late. From what I am told, there is ALWAYS a wait (hint hint, not if you get there before 8:30). Barrister's got coffee, gardener's got a smoothie, I order green tea. It takes me a minute to examine the entire menu, but I finally settle on biscuits and sausage gravy (2 biscuits, actually). They should be good, right? The restaurant's called Gravy after all. I also order an egg on the side. Gardener gets the same thing, except veggie gravy (why anyone would skip the pork is beyond me), and the barrister gets french toast. I have to add a little salt to the gravy, which is fine, since I like a lot of salt. I try the veggie gravy and the french toast too. All are good. Another hint, don't order 2 biscuits. Way too much food.

Dinner - I pass on paella (I'm not big on seafood) at a friend's place, and instead, head to the store for a few ingredients for a dish I meant to make last week. This is super simple, fast, and tasty... Meyer lemon pepper chicken orzo with garlic and herbs. Start the orzo, heat a pan for the chicken with a little olive oil. Trim fat from chicken and put into pan. Pour freshly squeezed meyer lemon juice over the bird and give a liberal grind of pepper and pinch of salt. Flip in pan and repeat. As chicken and orzo cook, chop the garlic and herbs (tonight, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, mint, oregano). When chicken is done, chop it up. Drain orzo. Stir all together. Grate some parm on top and another splash of meyer lemon juice, stir again. Salt and pepper to taste.

Today is my half-birthday, by the way...

AM-Tea

Mid-morning - Met CC and Porkchop for doughnuts at Annie's on NE Sandy and 72nd. We're there a little bit late, and they are out of a lot of things. But, I get a twist and a buttermilk bar, with some green tea

Mid-afternoon - Met G at the Chinese Garden, had some white tea

Later that afternoon - After tea, G and I wander around town a little bit, and decide to hit Produce Row for fries and beer. Good fries and good beer, although their fries seemed a little greasier than usual, but they were still crispy and tasty.

AM - Tea

Lunch - Greek sub from the Lovejoy Market on NW 23. On the side, Bugles and an A&W Rootbeer.

Dinner - I met Miss Tasty and Smooth Melon at Clay's Smokehouse Grill on SE Division. I got the beef brisket sandwich. Pickle, slaw, and potatoes on the side. Pretty good. Hard to judge against the other BBQ places in town, as I use the pulled pork sandwich as the standard dish and Clay's didn't seem to have one. Pretty good, though. They serve theirs with cheddar cheese and onion.

Eating in France (Part 1 of 2)

OK. I'm back from France. No photos of the food, but I'll try to pepper this post with a few other choice shots...

All right. Here we go...

Sat, Feb 4 - Dinner in Champagne. We get into Paris at around noon, and drive straight to Champagne, check into our hotel, and go to our first supplier, A. Soutiran (the same Champagne I celebrated my new house purchase with, and also brought to the Libra party). Tour some vineyards, 'taste' some bubbles, and eat from a nice spread of roast beef, ham, couscous, bread, terrine en croute.

Sun, Feb 5 - Petite dejeuner at hotel (coffee, cereal, croissant, etc).

Sun, Feb 5 - Dinner in Zellenberg (Alsace) with Anne-Marie and Marc Tempe. Chicken consomme with a piece of floated toast, Pot au Feu en France with shaved beets, cabbage, carrots, and celery root, a lovely salad, and a composed cheese plate of Muenster, fromage blanc, and potato (traditional in Alsace). Great mean and amazing wines (and a crazy cat who kept climbing the walls!! ).

Mon, Feb 6 - Petite dejeuner at Tempe's as well. Ham, Compte de Vosges, bread, coffee, homemade marmalade and preserves from Anne-Marie's mother, and juice.

Mon, Feb 6 - Dinner at the home of Jean-Pierre Charlot, owner and winemaker at Voillot. Gougere, pork on a toothpick, cashews, ham with carrots, onion, and cabbage, and a great big cheese plate. At this dinner, we had a 1978 Pommard Rugiens and a 1966 Volnay Champons. There were suggestions that we might be fed tete de veau. You know tete de veau? As I understand it, it's the entire head of a calf, boiled, sliced, eyes and everything. Some recipes say it's the jowl meat wrapped in the face, some call for tongue and brain. You all know I'm an omnivore, and would love to taste a little bit of this, but come on. At the home of a winemaker, you HAVE to eat what you are given, and clean the plate. The thought of this almost made me play sick and skip dinner, but I went, and thankfully, no tete de veau. (The photo is of some super old bottles in Charlot's cellar)

Tues, Feb 7 - Petite dejeuner at the Hotel des Ramparts in Beaune. The standard, croissant, coffee, juice.

Tues, Feb 7 - Lunch at Domaine DeMoor (in their SUPER cold cellars). 2 quiches (one mushroom, and one goat cheese with herbs), bread, a killer selection of cheeses, and, of course, wine. Super cool folks, too. Alice and Oliver were fantastic! And such amazing wines! When the 2004 vintage hits the market later this year (late fall, early summer), you should seek out these wines! St. Bris (a Sauvignon Blanc from the Chablis region), super old vine Aligote (planted in 1902), and a trio of stunning Chablis. (Photo of the cellar at DeMoor. Tues, Feb 7 - Dinner at Dom Boissieu in Beaujolais. Salad, terrine of foie gras, and caramelized onions with mustard with a Monbazillac wine as a first course. Beef bourgogne over rice as a main course, a cheese plate, tarte tatin, and chocolate. And lots of wine... Crazy old 'chateau' mansion in Beaujolais that had in in the same family (Lavernette) since 1596, and before that, was an abbey for Monks.

Wed, Feb 8 - Petite dejeuner at the hotel in Julienas, the typical croissant and coffee.

Wed, Feb 8 - Lunch with winemaker Louis Cheze at Le Bateau d'Emile in St. Joseph. Blood sausage, country pate, bread, salad, noodles with beef and sauce. Old St. Joseph, a vertical from 2001 back to 1996. Nice array of wines...

Wed, Feb 8 - Dinner at the home of the Saurel's in Vacqueyras. Lots of seafood is all I remember. I'm not a seafood fan, but I totally powered though it. You have to, you know? Oh, nice wines too. White and rose Vacq too. Don't see many of those. These guys are uber-biodynamic, so I knew their food would be organic and healthy...

Thurs, Feb 9 - Petite dejeuner at the hotel in Vacq.

Thurs, Feb 9 - Lunch with Louis Barroul at Ch. Saint Cosme. The lunch I'd been wanting all week thus far, salami, cheese, bread, wine, and fruit. Fantastic. And, a magnum of 2001 Gigondas Valbelle to drink! (Photo of some concrete tanks in the cave of St. Cosme. Concrete tanks/vats are pretty common in this part of France)

Thurs, Feb 9 - Dinner at Coupe Roses. This will be the subject of a separate post, it was so amazing.

Fri, Feb 10 - Lunch at Ch. Caladroy, bread, salad, roaster red peppers, sardines, sausage, lamb, cake, wine, cheese.

Fri, Feb 10 - Dinner at Hotel Bellevue in Puy l'Eveque, in the region of Cahors. Amuse of clam, potato chip, cucumber, and berry (separate, but on one plate). Goat cavocadovacado terrine with a tomato relish and olive bread. Pork cheeks with grilled pear (my first time eating . Dark chocolate cake. And, LOTS of Cahors wine (very dark, very structured. Could have used beef instead of pork, but at least I didn't get chicken or seafood, like some people in the group). (Photo of me, across the Lot river from the town of Puy l'Eveque)

Sat, Feb 11 - Brekky at the Hotel Bellevue, croissant, coffee, etc.

Sat, Feb 11 - Lunch, salami and bread in an old village atop a hill between Cahors and Bordeaux.

Sat, Feb 11 - Dinner, at a restaurant recommended by a supplier. Food was OK, but the service wasn't good, nor was the wine list. We couldn't figure out why this was recommended. I had a steak, cheese, scallops, and dark chocolate dessert.

Sun, Feb 12 - Brekky at the hotel, cereal, croissant, OJ, tea.

Sun, Feb 12 - Lunch at a restaurant in St. Emilion, I get a little charcuterie plate. We have some Bordeaux recommended by the waiter, and find it to be a little overdone (allright, a lot overdone). Lots of wood, jammy fruit, and extraction. Exactly what the French think Americans want (and they are mostly correct, but not with our group. We wanted elegance, style, and finesse. We got oak, power, and gobs of fruit).

Sun, Feb 12 - Dinner at the home of Alain Moueix (as near to Bordeaux royalty as you can get. His uncle Christian owns Petrus and Dominus). Pork tenderloin, potatoes, cheese, fruit tartes. A very nice last meal in France. We tried wines from Alain's winery in South Africa as well as some of his Bordeaux from 1990. Good stuff. ANd no offense to Madame Moueix' cooking, but the real treat of the meal was an amazingly aged chuck of Compte. Granular, nutty, amazing...

And that's it. Sunday was all airport food. I'll spare you the horrors. Keep an eye out for the post on dinner at Coupe Roses. You won't want to miss it.

Bad dinner. I went to see my friend F's band at the Doug Fir after pouring wine at a wine shop. Didn't get anywhere near home until 10:30, and had no chance to eat before, so I hit (gulp...) the drive-thru (faint of heart readers should stop reading now...) at Wendy's. Spicy chicken sandwich, salad, and root beer. I should have just not eaten.

Tues/Wed, Feb 21/22 - Back

Allright, I was trying to wait until I got my French report done to post more, but I can't seem to get that finished. So I begin again...

Tues, Feb 21 - Lunch
Leftover pork tenderloin on leftover Pearl Bakery ciabatta. A little splash of olive oil and sprinkle of coarse sea salt. Tasty little lunch. (And yes, the gentleman to the left is signing 'pig'.)


Tues, Feb 21 - Dinner
None. I'm a bit depressed for reasons I won't go into here, but I got home late, didn't want to cook, didn't want to go out, so I just lay on the couch, under a blanket. End up falling asleep, and finally make it into bed by 1AM.


Wed, Feb 22 - Lunch
I'm starving. 'Cause I didn't eat last night, probably. I am out on my rounds and stop at Caprial's Bistro. There is a bit of a wait to see the buyer, so I order up a tasty bacon (Nueske's) cheese (aged white cheddar) burger (Cascade Natural ground beef) with a side of fries. Man, it hits the spot. Fries are still a little limp. Wish they would take care of that.


Wed, Feb 22 - Dinner
CC, Porkchop and I meet up at Apizza Scholls. They haven't yet tasted the nirvana of the pies here. We get the Apizza Amore (which I swear was called something else before). Fresh mozz, fresh basil, tomato sauce, and Capicola. Also, a charcuterie plate (which included mole salami) and a ceasar salad. Me, I got Anchor Liberty Ale. I hadn't had this beer forever, and I don't like it anymore. I did have two pints, though. Hmm. I love it here. (This picture not mine, it's from Apizza's web site. Take this pie and add capicola, and this is what we ate).

Wed, Feb 1 AM - Tea and NPR.

Tues, Jan 31 PM - For dinner, I met Scoop, Cheesy T, and a friend of theirs at Dot's. I got there late, as work ran late, but I had a cheeseburger, fries, and a couple of beers.

Tues, Jan 31 Noon - For lunch, I had a roast beef and Swiss sandwich and a cucumber salad (w/ olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and dill). Water to drink.
